What's My Scene
I have spent most of my life around Motor Racing and Horse Racing. I have had a regular segment on the Radio TAB (1008am) Tattsbet Breakfast Show since 2002 covering the world of Motorsport. Interviews with drivers, previews and reviews of races and most important a few pointers in who is worth having a punt on.
My background in Motorsport goes back to Karting in the 80's, speedway and onto circuit racing. Between 92-96 I competed in the Australian Formula Ford Championships and to give you an idea of the strength of the competition at the time, the winners each year that I raced were in order - Cameron McConville, Craig Lowndes, Steven Richards, Jason Bright and David Besnard. Other drivers of note during the period were Marcos Ambrose, Mark Webber, Garth Tander, Todd Kelly, Jason Bargwanna to name just a few. My highlights were a pole position at Sandown, a race win at Oran Park and twice on the Podium at the Australian Grand Prix event when it was in Adelaide. Other podiums at Sandown and Phillip Island and the trophy for crash of year in 92.
With a goal to make motorsport a profession seemingly out of reach, I retired when I was 27 after having some fantastic experiences. To race on the best tracks in Australia, like Bathurst and the Grand Prix circuits of Melbourne and Adelaide was just fantastic. To be the main support category to V8 Supercar at a time when the young talent of Australian Motorsport was at its peak, gives me a lot of pride and satisfaction even though my dreams and aspirations didn't eventuate. To have memories such as Craig Lowndes trying to pass me at Winton in 92 and ending upside down in the fence, and of a young 16yo kid from Perth named Garth Tander being my mechanic during the 94 season. Having raced side by side with Australia's two greatest International stars in Webber and Ambrose will remain with me forever.
With an uncle who was a leading jockey in Qld in the 70's Sid Curran and another uncle who played Sheffield Shield Cricket for Qld before going on to be the Chairman of the Towoomba Turf Club Lyndsay Thorpe, there was always a horse-racing passion hidden in my genes.
When I decided to turn that passion to a career I teamed up with Les Ross Racing based at Eagle Farm in Brisbane. Whilst learning plenty off Les during my 3 years with him, his untimely and forced exit from the sport sent me in another direction of the horse-racing industry.
Over the last 20 years I owe most of my learning, knowledge and skills through a close friendship with high profile trainer Pat Duff. I am currently the Queensland Executive for the Australian Trainers Association, looking after the interests of trainers.
I also manage the racing interests of jockeys, planning and negotiating their rides. Currently I manage Jim Byrne, Jimmy Orman, Sean Cormack and Lani Fancourt.
My jockeys have won the last 3 Brisbane Premierships (Jim Byrne 2015, Jeff Lloyd 2016 & 2017).
